The concepts of sociology were close to ‘public’ concepts, but expanded them in illuminating ways. Concepts such as Charles H. Cooley’s notion of ‘the primary group’ or the Chicago School’s urban ecological notions of ‘the Central Business District’ passed into public usage. Works such as Middletown (Lynd and Lynd, 1929), combining ethnographic observation and simple statistics about a wide range of community topics, were widely read and discussed.
