Ana Llurba, Letras Libres

Núria Escur, los angeles Vanguardia

Example text

In the course of the thrill-packed twists and turns of his story he learns that the goal of his quest is self-knowledge. Such a quest defines heroism, and through this voyage he achieves the status of a young, but impressively mature person. The tone of the story and the quality of its mythical voice are therefore realistic and tough-minded, and will perhaps change a modern reader舗s ideas of what to expect from a Victorian adventure story written about a long-gone time of buccaneering exploits.

They create a discoverer舗s mind-set, the premonition of a world to be explored. One famous case would be that of Joseph Conrad, who thus described the strange origin of his most celebrated story, Heart of Darkness. As a boy he had been fascinated by a large white empty area in the center of his map of Africa; and he vowed he would someday visit this uncharted place, to discover what was there. 舡 Conrad was writing a novel on the whiteness of the map. In realistic terms, while the inscribed outline of a mysterious place has its own mysterious fascination, as it had for Conrad, and while charts are essential to all travels into unknown parts, the travel itself still needs to be undertaken舒otherwise the map will be an idle fantasy.

His fate was to be the author of a perpetual escape from his own people, except as he imagined them, including their darker side舒in The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, he mystified the war between the evil and the good sides of the human soul. He wrote as he traveled舒almost incessantly, it would seem, in order to defeat death itself. While he never really enjoyed sea travel舒indeed was afraid of such voyages舒he nevertheless traveled thousands of miles by sea, inevitably in all weathers.
