The disparate social roles are thus reflected in a sociolinguistic situation whereby Kwegu speak both their own language and the language of the Mursi or Bodi while the latter tend not to speak Kwegu. This division of language use is typical for hunter-gatherer societies interacting with pastoral and agricultural people. Although the Kwegu are looked upon as second-class citizens inside Mursi and Bodi society, they seem to accept their social inequality. Each Kwegu home, or man in particular, has a Mursi or Bodi patron who looks after his interests.

As suggested by Greenberg (1983b) the language probably belonged to the same subgroup of Eastern Cushitic as Konso and Oromo. The present-day Yaaku inhabit the foothills to the north of Mount Kenya. In the 1930s there seems to have been a decision to abandon Yaaku in favor of Maasai, presumably as part of an adaptive strategy in order to become pastoralists. At present, there seem to be only some fifty Yaaku speakers left, who still practice hunting and gathering. They are all over 40 years of age, according to Heine (1982:30).

It is only when they start interacting with neighboring groups whose cultures are viewed as more prestigious that their own languages become particularly threatened. In the Ethiopian context, the Weyto probably gave up their earlier language this way. They are known as hippopotamus hunters of the Lake Tana region. The ethnic Weyto live in an area surrounded by speakers of Amharic which they use as their primary and first language; their former language probably belonged to Cushitic (Bender, Bowen, Cooper and Ferguson 1976:14).
